|The Ghan. It’s an odd name for a train but in Australian history it is a living legend. The legend has soared to new heights with the extension of The Ghan journey to Darwin. When The Ghan first departed Adelaide for Alice Springs, it was always intended that it would one day travel through to Darwin. More than 70 years on, in 2004, that dream has become reality.|
Boarding The Ghan in Adelaide or Darwin, experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. Connections are available on the Indian Pacific and The Overland for guests travelling to or from Sydney and Melbourne. Enjoy 2 nights aboard this great train in either direction. Marvel at the spectacular Australian landscapes from fertile countryside surrounding Adelaide to the rusty hues of the Red Centre, onto the tropical splendour of the Top End. The Ghan is the ultimate journey through the heart of the continent.

Service is a new luxury level of train travel, like no other Australiantrain accommodation. The new Platinum Service Cabins are currently beingbuilt by a luxury boat builder to a completely new floor plan inspired by theworld’s most luxurious trains and are expected to be in service later in theyear.
Platinum Cabins will be approximately twice the size of our standard Gold Twin Cabins with each room offering deluxe accommodation including doublebeds, spacious ensuite and 24 hour room service. They will have all the modern comforts, in a classic style, with a distinctly Australian character.
The Ghan will offer accommodation options that rival the best world-class trains. This new service level is in addition to our existing Red and Gold Services, which will continue to operate on The Ghan. This means that The Ghan will now cater to all budgets from Red Service the most economical wayto travel, through to Gold Service for those holidaymakers who want to travel in comfort and now the deluxe offering of the new Platinum Service.Platinum Service has been designed to meet the needs of the discerning traveller looking for that next level of comfort that will truly be the ultimate wayto travel in style by train through the heart of Australia. This is the most exciting development in Australian Rail Travel since February 2004 when The Ghan travelled to Darwin connecting Adelaide to Darwin byrail for the first time. The details of Platinum Service are still under wraps as final preparations are being made. It is expected that initial interest will be very strong, as rail enthusiasts from around the globe seek to be the first, to experience this new level of service.
|The Ghan Travel Tips|
'The Ghan' is a world renowned rail adventure.
Irrespective of your budget, its a great way to travel through the centre of Australia. The journey is broken by stops in Katherine and Alice Springs, allowing you to stretch your legs and experience a central Australian town.
The 'Gold Kangaroo' service is a delight. The meals are something special. Each sitting you meet someone new and are treated to fine dining with an everchanging view. The beds are comfortable and the rocking of the train is sure to give you a great nights sleep.
The cabins are comfortable and allow you to enjoy the journey in privacy, the bathrooms are small but have (literally) everything that opens and shuts. There is also a Lounge car where you relax and enjoy some company, a drink/snack or a good book. With the meals being a dining experience and the breaks at Katherine and Alice Springs, time passes quite quickly and you are there before you know it.
Keep in mind that the bedding are twin bunks (one above the other) so one of you will have to climb some steps to get to your bed. Single cabins are also available, for these cabins the bathrooms are at the end of each carriage.
Red Kangaroo Day/Night seat
For those keeping to a budget the Red Kangaroo offers a cost effective way to experience 'The Ghan'. The Rail Saver fares are often available and are a good deal. You may find the Six Months passes to be an even better deal, this allows you unlimited travel for six months, backpackers (holding a YHA or VIP card) get an even cheaper deal.
The Red Kangaroo Sleeper allows you to save a little form the cost of a Gold Kangaroo sleeper as your meals are not included. But bedding is aincluded in your private cabin. Similarly bathrooms are available at the end of each carriage.
