Situated 250 km East of Darwin, Kakadu provides a variety of unique experiences. Boasting 280 species, (or a third of Australia’s) bird species, Kakadu is a haven for bird life, the Yellow Water Cruise providing an excellent opportunity for birds and crocodile spotting.
Kakadu boasts outstanding opportunities to view Aboriginal Rock art, dating back up to 40,000 years ago. Aboriginal cultural tours and cruises are accessible from Kakadu.
The South Alligator, East Alligator and Yellow Water billabong also provide an opportunity to catch the famed sportfish, the barramundi. Kakadu tours are available from Kakadu or Darwin. Self drive trips are also possible.

Traditional owners. A number of aboriginal groups have been located within the Kakadu region for tens of thousands of years. Kakadu is sacred to the Mirrar Aboriginals clan, the Mirrar trace back its ancestors there from 40,000 to 60,000 years ago. Mirrar rock drawings depict life in the area from tens of thousands of years ago, images that are eagerly explored by today's tourists.

Kakadu Travel Tips The one thing that I suggest when visiting Kakadu is to allow yourself enough time to see and appreciate Kakadu Nationl Park.
One day Kakadu
If you only have one day and your accommodation is pre booked in Darwin then you may have little option but to do a one day Kakadu trip. This will give you a taste of Kakadu and give you an insight into Aboriginal Rock Art sites and allow you to experience a Yellow Water Cruise.
If you were going to do a one day tour (particularly from Nov - May) then its worth including a scenic flight as well, the flights are able to fly over Jim Jim and Twin Falls at this time of the year (the wet season) and the falls should be flowing.
Yellow Water Cruises
Pretty much a must for any Kakadu trip. Ideally you may be able to do the early or the last cruises of the day (6.45, 09.00 or 16.30). The sunrise and sunsets are spectacular, its cooler, (meaning its more comfortable for you) as well as the wildlife is more prolific during the cooler parts of the day. (Note these times vary over the wet season).

What better way to see the landscapes and wildlife than on a half or full day Kakadu fishing trip. With all equipment and tuition supplied, take your chances in trying to bag the famed barramundi, a spectacular fighting fish and a fine meal.
Ubirr
As well as being an excellent site for Aboriginal art, Ubirr provides an outstanding location to look out over the flood plains to the Kakadu escarpment and is a special place to enjoy a sunset. Though likely to be reasonably busy. the view and the feel of an Ubirr sunset is one to be savoured. But be prepared, once the sun sets the mozzies came out in force - long sleeves and repellent are recommended.
During the wet season roads are closed to Ubirr, this allows the wet season trips to begin giving you exclusive access to the art site and a stark insight into the change in landscapes that accompany the wet season.
